About hairball cat food

Cats groom themselves for hours and swallow loose hair as they go. Most of it passes through, but some can build up and come back as a hairball, especially in long-haired cats and in spring when coats shed.   • Brush your cat a few times a week, daily for long-haired cats.
  • Choose a hairball formula with added fibre.
  • Encourage drinking: wet food and a water fountain both help.
  • Watch for over-grooming, which can be a sign of stress or itchy skin.

How often is it normal for a cat to have hairballs?

An occasional hairball, perhaps once a month or so, is common. If your cat brings up hairballs often, or retches without producing one, talk to your vet.

Can kittens eat hairball food?

Most hairball formulas are made for adult cats. Kittens need food made for growth, so keep them on kitten food until about 12 months unless your vet suggests otherwise.
