About weight control & sterilised cat food

Indoor living, sterilisation and getting older all tend to lower a cat's energy needs, which makes it easy for extra weight to creep on. Carrying too much weight can affect your cat's mobility and overall health, so it is worth acting early. Weight control cat food is formulated with fewer calories and less fat than standard adult food, while still providing good-quality protein to help maintain lean muscle, and often added fibre to help your cat feel satisfied. Sterilised cat formulas follow the same idea for neutered and spayed cats, and many also support urinary health. When choosing, think about whether your cat needs to lose weight or maintain it, how active they are, and whether they prefer dry food, wet pouches and tins, or both. ZUKI Pet Shop stocks weight management and sterilised cat food from Hill's Science Plan, Royal Canin, Orijen, IAMS and Ultra Pet. Browse the range below, or see all our cat food.

How to choose weight control cat food

  • Check body condition: you should be able to feel your cat's ribs easily, with a slight waist behind them.
  • If your cat has been sterilised, consider a sterilised or light formula, as energy needs usually drop after the procedure.
  • Measure daily portions and include any wet food and treats in the total.
  • Encourage play and movement, especially for indoor cats.
  • Never put a cat on a crash diet; cats should lose weight gradually, so ask your vet to help set a safe plan.

Weight control cat food FAQs

Why do sterilised cats gain weight?

After sterilisation, a cat's energy needs usually go down while appetite can go up. If portions stay the same, weight can slowly increase. A sterilised or weight control formula, with measured portions, helps keep calories in check.

How fast should my cat lose weight?

Slowly. Rapid weight loss can be dangerous for cats, so the aim is gradual, steady progress. Your vet can recommend a target weight and a safe rate of loss for your cat.

How do I switch my cat to a weight control food?

Mix the new food with the current one over about 7 days, increasing the new food each day. Cats can be fussy, so go slowly, and contact your vet if your cat stops eating.
