About skin & coat care for dogs
A soft, shiny coat and calm skin usually start with what your dog eats. Skin and coat formulas add nutrients such as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which help support the skin's natural barrier and a glossy coat. Some recipes also use a single or less common protein for dogs whose skin reacts to certain ingredients, and gentle shampoos can help between meals. Itching, red patches, hair loss or constant licking can have many causes, from fleas to allergies, so see your vet if the problem is new or getting worse. ZUKI Pet Shop stocks skin and coat food and care from Hill's Science Plan, Royal Canin, Montego and Animology. Browse the range below, or see all our dog food.
How to choose skin and coat food
- Pick the right size: many skin formulas come in mini, medium and large breed versions.
- Keep tick and flea treatment up to date, because flea bites are a common cause of itchy skin.
- Give a new food 6 to 8 weeks: skin and coat take time to show a change.
- Switch gradually over about 7 days, mixing old and new food.
- Ask your vet before choosing food for a diagnosed skin condition.
Skin and coat FAQs
How long until I see a difference in my dog's coat?
Usually around 6 to 8 weeks. Skin cells and hair take time to renew, so stay with a new food for a couple of months before judging it.
Why is my dog always scratching?
Fleas, ticks, allergies, dry skin and infections can all cause itching. Check that parasite treatment is up to date, and see your vet if the scratching continues or the skin looks red or broken.
