About weight control dog food
Keeping your dog at a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for their long-term wellbeing. Extra kilos put strain on joints and can make everyday activity harder, especially for older and larger dogs. Weight control dog food, sometimes labelled light, fit or perfect weight, is designed to help: these recipes are lower in calories and fat than standard adult food, but still provide good-quality protein to help maintain lean muscle, and often extra fibre so your dog feels satisfied after meals. Some also include joint support. When choosing, consider whether your dog needs to lose weight or simply maintain it, as well as their size, age and activity level. Pair the right food with measured portions, fewer treats and regular exercise. ZUKI Pet Shop stocks weight management food from Hill's Science Plan, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Acana, Orijen, Montego, Ultra Pet and Olympic. Browse the range below, or see all our dog food.
How to choose weight control dog food
- Check body condition: you should be able to feel your dog's ribs easily and see a waist from above.
- Choose a weight control recipe for your dog's size so kibble and calorie levels suit them.
- Weigh food with a kitchen scale rather than a scoop, and feed for your dog's target weight.
- Count treats as part of the daily allowance, and keep them to a small share of total calories.
- Aim for slow, steady weight loss and ask your vet to help set a target, especially if your dog is very overweight.

Weight control dog food FAQs
How do I know if my dog is overweight?
You should be able to feel your dog's ribs without pressing hard, see a waist when looking from above and a tuck behind the ribs from the side. If you cannot, your dog may be carrying extra weight. Your vet can assess body condition and suggest a target weight.
Can I just feed my dog less of their normal food?
Cutting portions of a regular food also reduces the nutrients your dog gets and can leave them hungry. Weight control recipes are lower in calories but still complete and balanced, and often higher in fibre to help your dog feel full.
How should I switch to a weight control food?
Mix the new food into the old over about 7 days, increasing the new food each day. Follow the feeding guide for your dog's target weight and weigh your dog every few weeks to track progress.
